Cuba-A Failed Experiment?

Luis Martin is a La Havana native who came to this country in 1960 to study English as a young man. His parents sent him money from Cuba until the money was cut off and it was decided that Luis would stay in the United States.

In a very interesting discussion/debate, Bruce and Luis found little to agree on. The Cuban revolution was not a peasant revolution. A great majority of the communist party were workers in Havana and throughout the bigger cities. There's always a relationship under socialism between the intelligence adn the working class.

The blockades from both the US and Russia hurt the Cuban economy. The Cubans didn't have anything that Russia wanted to buy except for sugar.

What About Us?

At least fifteen women have been murdered in Albuquerque and their bodies buried on the West Mesa. Families of the victims are not satisfied with the job the Albuquerque police have been doing. In addition the police have been unwilling to ask for help from the FBI and any other agencies who could help solve the crimes. Who is Dan Valdez and what does does he know about the murders. Reports are that Mr. Valdezx knew most of the murder victims because he worked at a women's detention center for 21 years. Victims families want the case solved, they want closure and justice for their loved once.  If these were well-to-do rich women, we would be hearing about this on the international news but because these were working girls, their murders seem to be given a low priority.

Water and Pollutants

Allen was joined by Leslie Weinstock and Joe Wexler who represent Agua es Vida (AVAT). AVAT is a citizen watchdog group that goes to Albuquerque water authority meetings to monitor the proceedings and voice the concerns of New Mexico residents. New Mexico has a big problem with its water sources:

  • Starting in November 2010, 90% of the drinking water will be obtained from the Rio Grande river.

  • There are at least 100,000 man maid chemicals in the environment and only 91 of then are regulated. That's less than one percent. That means industrial chemical, pharmaceuticals as well as radioactive chemicals, viruses and bacteria are most likely in our drinking water. We should be very upset that the water authority is not being straightforward with us.

AVAT is asking for

  • Updated standards ( most of the standards are 30-40 years old and not applicable to today's situation.

  • More sensitive testing

  • More detailed reports

  • Transparency from the New Mexico water authority.

African American Studies/Issues

Sonia Gipson-Rankin, JD and Edward Hakim Bellamy spoke with Allen about the African American community in the United States. This show focused on the African American community on a national level. A later show will air that focuses on issues affecting the Albuquerque African American population. The strength of the history of the black people here in NM can not be compared. Their story, is as old as some of the groupings of the first african american s in the US. One third of the cowboys were black.

The first African american woman in history came through New Mexico in the mid 1500's. (not Jamestown as often suggested) Isabel Olivares. Isabel de Olvero, part of the Juan Guerra de Pesa Expedition, helped to colonize what has since become New Mexico in 1598.

Guests:

  • Sonia Gipson-Rankin, JD Associate Director of African American Studies program at UNM College of Arts & Sciences.

  • Edward Hakim Bellamy, is the Community Programs Coordinator at the State of New Mexico Office of African American Affairs, and a Performance Poet.

Military Families Speak Out, Recruiting in High Schools

  • Gary Keen - Acoma Vietnam Era veteran

  • Charles Powell - Veterans for Peace

Military Families Speak Out (505) 271-0273

This organization meets on the 1st and 3rd Wednesday of each month at 4:45 PM at the Albuquerque Center for Peace ad Justice, 6400 Indian School Road NE - Albuquerque.

They object to salaries for the military/JROTC "teachers" salaries ranging from $107,326.00 to $54,000.00. The lowest paid military "teacher" earns far more than the average teacher in APS and they are paid, it appears more than the most qualified and experienced real teacher with many years of experience. Supporting Groups: Military Families Speak Out, Vets for Peace, and Stop the War Machine. Information: 505-271-0273, mitzi919@yahoo.com .

The Iraq War and the Economy

The Iraq war, which was estimated at about 3 trillion has bloated and most likely will cost more like 6 or 7 trillion. Note that the war is funded by borrowed money. China has recently changed the borrowing status of the US. What does a stack of a trillion dollar look like in $100 dollar bills? It's about the size of two football fields or a large city block.

The US seems to regard the entire world as our "strategic interest". Did you know that a few weeks ago the US deployed 46 war ships and 7000 marines to Costa Rica for what they call "Drug Interdiction"?  What?

Mexico

Why should we be concerned with what's going on in Mexico?

Mexico is our neighbor; We've had relationships with them for centuries; We have cultural and trade ties and we are cooperating in he drug war. What is happening in Mexico right now will have great consequences for years to come.

Rebeca Jasso-Aguilar and Kent Patterson spoke about Mexico, the drug violence taking thousands of lives and how the people are fighting back, taking back their country.  There's much drug violence and deaths which you do not hear about on the mainstream news. The level of intensity is very heightened now.
